Concerning The Term Numinous

David Myatt

°°°°°°°

Two essays about the ‘numinous’, a term used by David Myatt in his philosophy of pathei-mathos and also by the occult group the Order of Nine Angles in expressions such as ‘the sinister-numinous’ and ‘the sinister-numinous aesthetic’.

The essays place the term into the correct historical, philosophical, and occult perspective.

The Two Types Of Satanism

Order of Nine Angles

O9A

°°°°°°°°°

The Two Types Of Satanism

There are basically two types of Satanism: (i) the ‘modern American’ type manufactured and propagated by Howard Stanton Levey – better known under his aliases of Anton LaVey and Anton Szandor LaVey – and (ii) the ‘traditional Satanism’ as manifest in the Occult philosophy and the praxis of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A, ONA) as developed and expounded by the pseudonymous “Anton Long” which is widely believed to be a pseudonym used by the neo-nazi extremist, and “theoretician of terror” {1}, David Myatt. {2}{3}

The Satanism Of Levey

The modern Satanism of Levey is based on the premise that Satan is a symbol of the carnal, the selfish, the egoistic, nature of human beings, with satanism understood as manifesting the raison d’êtres of ‘might is right’, of ‘lex talionis’, and of the individualistic ideas expressed in Ayn Rand’s Objectivism {4}.

This type of Satanism promotes “the total satisfaction of the ego” {5} and obeying the law of the land {6}.

The Satanism Of Anton Long

The traditional Satanism of Anton Long is based on the scholarly premise that – as described in the O9A text The Geryne of Satan {7} – (i) hasatan – the satan – refers (in the Septuagint) to the chief adversary (of the so-called ‘chosen ones’) and to the chief schemer against those who regard themselves as the chosen people of God/Jehovah, and (ii) “a satan” historically (in the Septuagint) refers to someone who is an adversary of and who thus is pejoratively regarded (by those so opposed) as scheming, as plotting against those who regard themselves as the chosen people of God/Jehovah.

Thus, for the O9A, a satanist is someone who is heretically opposed to those who believe they are the chosen people of God/Jehovah, with O9A satanism understood as an antinomian – amoral, heretical – means to such exeatic personal experiences as shape and evolve an individual’s character and understanding. {8}{9}.

The contrast between the Satanism manufactured and propagated by Howard Stanton Levey and the Satanism developed and expounded by Anton Long is perhaps best illustrated by comparing their respective lives and their respective writings, for one would expect their respective types of Satanism to be reflected in their own lives and in their writings.

A Contrast Of Lives

The life of Howard Stanton Levey consisted of conducting carnivalesque – and sometimes fetishistic – ‘satanic’ rituals while dressed like Mephistopheles in some amateur production of Marlowe’s Faust; selling membership in his showmanry Church of Satan while telling members to “obey the law”; pontificating – and giving lectures – about his type of satanism; giving interviews to journalists; hosting parties for hedonists and Hollywood-types, and boasting about his past.

Levey, for instance, boasted that as a seventeen year old he worked in the Beatty circus and handled lions and tigers, although circus records from that time showed that no one named Levey or LaVey worked for them. He boasted that he had worked as a photographer for the San Francisco police department although they had no record of anyone called Levey or LaVey working for them.

Levey boasted that he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe, and yet again there is no documentary evidence to substantiate his claim. He boasted that he worked in a burlesque theatre called Mayan and met Marilyn Monroe there whom he claimed worked as a striptease artiste although the owner of the theatre at the time – Paul Valentine – denied it was a burlesque theatre, stated Levey never worked there, with there also being no documentary evidence that Monroe worked there as a striptease artiste.

Levey boasted that he enrolled on a criminology course at the City College in San Francisco although the college had no record of his enrolment under his real name, Levey, or under the La Vey alias he often used.

Thus the life of Howard Stanton Levey does indeed exemplify his type of Satanism: hedonistic, egoistic, boastful, materialistic, and showmanry. In common parlance: all mouth and trousers.

            In contrast to Levey, “Anton Long” – aka David Myatt – is a “principal proponent of contemporary neo-Nazi ideology and theoretician of revolution” {10}, was “the mentor” who drove someone to kill three people {11}, who before and after 9/11 publicly praised bin Laden and al Qaeda, called the 9/11 attacks ‘acts of heroism’ and urged the killing of Jews {12}, who preached “race war and terrorism” {13}, who wrote “a detailed step-by-step guide for terrorist insurrection with advice on assassination targets, rationale for bombing and sabotage campaigns, and rules of engagement” {14}, who travelled and spoke in several Arab countries about Jihad {15}, who was a bodyguard of England’s principle neo-nazi activist, Colin Jordan {16}, who took over the leadership of the violent neo-nazi group Combat 18 when its previous leader was jailed for murder {17}, who is an “example of the axis between right-wing extremists and Islamists” {17}, who is a Martial Arts expert {18}, who was imprisoned twice for violent offences in connection with his neo-nazi activism {17}, and who in 1998 was arrested for conspiracy to murder and for other offences {14}{19}.

The life of Myatt does indeed exemplify O9A Satanism: actually or potentially harmful, destructive, pernicious, baleful, misleading, deadly; bad in moral character; malevolent, offensive, sly; and hard and difficult. In common parlance: extremist, violent, and terrorist.

A Contrast Of Writings

The sources used by Howard Levey – evident in his much-vaunted ‘satanic bible’ and in his letters – are populist interpretations of the likes of Nietzsche and Ayn Rand, populist books about psychology, with the anonymous polemic titled Might Is Right much plagiarized. Since Levey could not read Ancient Greek, Latin, and Arabic, when writing about Satan, Iblis (Shaitan) and the medieval “grimoire” tradition of magic(k) that derived from such earlier Arabic works as Ghayat al-Ḥakim and also from some medieval Latin esoteric texts – such as those of Marsilio Ficino – Levey had no knowledge of such primary sources and had to rely on populist books and the interpretations and interpolations of others. Thus in his understanding of the Biblical Satan he had to rely on translations, unable as he was to read the κοινή Greek of the Septuagint.

Such sources and populist interpretations are also much in evidence in texts written by Aquino, who according to his own account {20} aided and contributed to the production of Levey’s ‘satanic bible’ and his ‘satanic rituals’ books. Like Levey, Aquino could not read Ancient Greek, Latin, and Arabic, and also used populist summaries of philosophies and weltanschauungen, ancient and modern. Thus, in his The Crystal Tablet of Set, populist summaries of philosophies and weltanschauungen, ancient and modern, precede a quite minimalist and vague presentation of ‘satanist’ and/or of Temple of Set ideas. Thus, a chapter on ‘ethics’ consists of 12 pages of populist summaries of the likes of Plato, Hegel, Marx, et al, followed by a meagre few paragraphs concerning good and evil in an occult context, and which paragraphs merely present rather cliched personal opinions, such as that “there is thus no easy answer to the question of whether a given magical act is good or evil” and that “it is up to the magician to determine what judgments – by which judges – will be important”. As befits such pseudo-intellectualism, the references in such texts are often to populist works (such as The Social Contract by Robert Ardrey) just as quotations from such people as Plato are invariably in translations, not by Aquino, but by someone else.

Thus the writings of Howard Stanton Levey – and those of Aquino, his helper – do indeed exemplify the type of Satanism found in The Church Of Satan: populist, plagiaristic, reliant on the interpretations and interpolations of others, and unoriginal. In common parlance: plebeian, mundane.

            In complete contrast, Myatt has “fluency in the classical languages (Greek and Latin), as well as Arabic and possibly Persian, [and is] possessed of a gifted intellect and apparently a polymath,” {21} and thus can read primary esoteric, classical, and alchemical sources, and the Greek texts of the Septuagint (the Old Testament) and the New Testament, in their original language. Thus when “Anton Long” writes in the O9A text The Geryne of Satan about Satan he does so based on a scholarly knowledge of the Greek text of the Old Testament.

In addition, when Myatt – in contrast to both Levey and Aquino – writes of ethics and about ‘good and evil’ in, for example, chapter IV – Questions of Good, Evil, Honour, and God – of his 2013 book Religion, Empathy, and Pathei-Mathos, he provides passages in Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic, along with his own translations. Similarly, when discussing ethics in his recent book Classical Paganism And The Christian Ethos, Myatt provides the relevant Greek texts (such as from the Gospel of John) and his own translations.

Thus the O9A writings of Anton Long do indeed exemplify O9A Satanism: intellectually and historically based {22}, scholarly, original. In common parlance: a cut above the rest.

Conclusion

The contrast between the life and writings of Howard Levey and Anton Long could not be more stark.

Levey was a showman, a dilettante, a plagiarist, a charlatan, and a mundane.

Anton Long, however, was a practical – a hands-on – extremist and Faustian man as well as an intellectual, a scholar, a martial arts expert {18}, “emblematic of the modern syncretism of radical ideologies” {23}, and well-described as an “extremely violent, intelligent, dark, and complex individual” {24} who undertook “a global odyssey which took him on extended stays in the Middle East and East Asia, accompanied by studies of religions ranging from Christianity to Islam in the Western tradition and Taoism and Buddhism in the Eastern path. In the course of this Siddhartha-like search for truth, Myatt sampled the life of the monastery in both its Christian and Buddhist forms.” {25}.

Which global odyssey formed only part of his fifty year quest – his personal hermetic anados (ἄνοδος) {26} – along the Seven Fold (Sinisterly-Numinous) Way of the O9A culminating in his discovery of Lapis Philosophicus {27} and thence the living of the life of a reclusive Mage, and thus who is a modern example of the ancient Rounwytha tradition, whose

            “perceiveration is of the nameless, wordless, unity beyond our mortal, abstract, ideations of ‘sinister’ and ‘numinous’, of Left Hand Path and Right Hand Path, and also – and importantly – of ‘time’. For it is our ideation of ‘time’ – with its assumption of a possible temporal progression, via various temporary causal forms, toward something ‘better’ or more ‘advanced’ or more ‘perfect’ (in personal or supra-personal terms) – that underlies the magian/patriarchal/masculous approach that has dominated, and still dominates, Western occultism and esotericism in general, fundamental to which is a hubriatic egoism: the illusion that is the individual will.” {28}

Such is the modern heresy of the O9A which esoterically and exoterically contradicts the modern Satanism of Levey based as the Satanism of Levey is on the premise that Satan is a symbol for plebeians, and thus of the carnal, the selfish, the egoistic, the mundane, nature of human beings.

In stark contrast, the Satanism of the O9A is of a Faustian, a Promethean, and life-long endeavour to defy all ideations, all causal forms, and reach out to personally and in practical ways experience and learn from both the ‘sinister’ and the ‘numinous’ and to thus discover Lapis Philosophicus.

The Real Anton Long?
(pdf)

°°°°°°°°°

Extract:

One of the many spurious claims made in recent years about David Myatt is that he has admitted to founding and being the leader the O9A. Those making this claim state that their “evidence” is Myatt’s political memoir The Ethos of Extremism: Some Reflexions on Politics and A Fanatical Life, written in 2012.

What they do not state are the relevant facts from that memoir which contradict their claim […]

Myatt has consistently and for over thirty years denied being Anton Long. In addition several academics are of the opinion that he is not Anton Long […]

But if Myatt is not Anton Long, then who might be?

A neglected article states that there certainly are clues to this alternate identity and goes on to provide them.

°°°°°°°°°

The Fantasy Role-Playing World Of The O9A

The Order Of Nine Angles (ONA, O9A) could be considered to be a φαντασία, that is, a making visible (of some-thing). A phrenic image, an imagining; a phrenic apprehension of an object of perception; an ingenious invention or design; a visionary notion, a fantasy.

In less pedantic, and more practical, terms, it could be understood as a new genre of fantasy role-playing games: a modular game that occurs and is acted-out in real-life with the player interacting with real people and assuming various roles. A game with no set rules, no manual, only guidelines some of which conflict with other ones and some of which are, or seem to be, confusing and/or polemical and/or distracting.

It is a game with no time limit whose only goal is pathei-mathos (a learning from practical, hard, experience) via playing the game. It is a modular game because the player can choose to construct their apprehension, their version, their fantasy, of the O9A from various modules such as ‘satanist’, or ‘Rounwytha’, or ‘Drecc’, or ‘pagan sorcerer’, or ‘Balobian’ or ‘seeker along the seven fold way’, or anarchist, or ‘neo-nazi’ or even ‘terrorist’, with one of the guidelines of the game being that any player can invent or design a new module (in O9A esoteric-speak, a new Insight Role, a Grade Ritual such as that of Internal Adept) and add it to the game.

It is also a game of conflict: conflict with other ‘satanists’ or with other ‘sorcerers’ or conflict with those whose apprehension or fantasy of the O9A differs from theirs; and/or conflict with those who oppose the ideology, the actions, the beliefs, of whatever “Insight Role(s)” the player has adopted. There could even be conflict with and within one’s self: between one’s ‘dark’ or sinister (amoral) side and one’s ‘numinous’ or emphatic (moral) side.

Being a fantasy role-playing game, it does not exist in cyberspace but rather in both the lives of those who play the game for however short a time, and in the making visible – the presencing, the fantasy – that a player may have of the game. For it exists as an apprehension by the player and/or by the opponent, but which apprehension may include an image or images of it (or modules relevant to it) accessible via cyberspace.

As a particular type of fantasy role-playing game it has no ‘leader’, needs no organization, requires no hierarchy of instructors, and is not and cannot be copyrighted. In sum: the fantasy O9A can be whatever the player desires it to be or believes it should be. Rather like modern satanism itself.

In the original, classic game – as played back in the day by aficionados of ONA 1.0 – there were (i) real-life Insight Roles such as neo-nazi activist, anarchist, being an assassin, a police officer or a member of the armed forces, and (ii) Grade Rituals such as Internal Adept (spending at least three months living alone in the wilderness) and The Abyss (living alone in an underground cavern for a lunar month).

Happy Gaming!

Esoteric Notes Concerning The Numinous

°°°°°°°°°

Order of Nine Angles

O9A

Given that the term numinous is part of the O9A expression ‘the sinister-numinous tradition’ – and thus relevant to understanding the esotericism of the Order of Nine Angles – we present here two articles which discuss the term in some detail.

The articles provide the required historical, metaphysical, and esoteric, context for correctly understanding the term; and which context reveals, contrary to a popular misunderstanding, that the term ‘numinous’ – implying “of or relating to a god or a divinity, revealing or indicating the presence of a divinity; divine, spiritual” – was used in English centuries before Rudolf Otto appropriated it to describe mysterium tremendum et fascinans and thus restricted it to religions and to religions experience, which restrictive religious use is quite different from David Myatt’s metaphysical usage:

“The numinous is what manifests or can manifest or remind us of (what can reveal) the natural balance of ψυχή; a balance which ὕβρις upsets. This natural balance – our being as human beings – is or can be manifest to us in or by what is harmonious, or what reminds us of what is harmonious and beautiful.”

The Anti-Patriarchal O9A Ethos

Order of Nine Angles

O9A

°°°°°°°°°

Concerning The Anti-Patriarchal O9A Ethos

Question: “I read that one of things that differentiates the O9A from other Left Hand Path occultists and from other Satanists is its anti-patriarchal ethos. Could you expand upon this?”

Reply:

As noted in the O9A text Distinguishing The O9A, {1} distributed in 2016,

One of the most outward practical signs of the O9A logos is the fact that the O9A has and always has had Sapphic nexions and – according to an academic source – {2} “has more female supporters than either the Church of Satan or the Temple of Set [and] more women with children.”

For the [O9A] code of kindred honour embodies respect for women and gender equality and – as is evident from basic texts such as Naos – the O9A also embodies equality in regard to the sexual preference of individuals. Furthermore, the O9A has always emphasized that “only through the female are the forces represented by the three alchemical substances and their nine combinations capable of being released in a physical way.” {3}

That is, it is women who are the key to creating, opening – and keeping open – nexions to the acausal. Thus, in the O9A, women are of fundamental importance, equal partners, and indeed essential to the O9A, with the O9A ethos contrary to and opposed to the misogyny still so rife in the Western world, as elsewhere.

Terran men in their majority seem to have a genetic predisposition to be arrogant, misogynist, competitive, and desirous of war and conflict. Until, that is, some are touched – perhaps transformed – via pathei-mathos: by grief, by personal suffering, by such personal loss of loved ones or comrades as – even if for only moments – place their own mortal lives into a supra-personal, sometimes even into an Aeonic, perspective.

Yet each new generation of terran men begins anew. Self-assured, arrogant, misogynist, competitive, and desirous of war and conflict, as they so often in their majority are. To them, this new generation, the pathei-mathos – such stories – of their forefathers seem unreal; voices of a past generation to be perhaps condescendingly listened to but seldom if ever appreciated and almost always never to become a source of learning.

Thus, given the dominant patriarchal ethos of past eras and of the current era, does the cycle of a lack of conscious, willed, evolution continue, and repeat itself, generation following terran generation. Which is where – for those who know – certain esoteric traditions come into play.

For such traditions preserve, hand on to each new generation, a means, a praxis, whereby that learning of previous generations has been distilled into a transformative, an alchemical, essence so enabling us, both men and women, as a sentient species to consciously evolve. One such means of esoteric transformation is the Seven Fold Way (7FW) of the Order of Nine Angles. For the 7FW is basically a series of consciously undertaken practical experiences. Experiences which can – which should – provoke the person into learning about and being honest with themselves, with such experiences and such learning enabling the person to develop their own weltanschauung and thus be independent of previous dogma esoteric or otherwise.

In other words, the 7FW evolves the individual because they have an understanding which transcends the human made dialectic of opposites – the abstractions, forms, categories, terms, the naming – which has guided the thinking and often the way of life of most humans for thousands of years. This understanding goes beyond words and is highly personal; germane to the individual.

Of pathei mathos in general, that is, outside of an Occult context, [David] Myatt writes in one of his metaphysical tracts,

“For we human beings, pathei-mathos possesses a numinous, a living, authority; [for] the wisdom, the understanding, that arises from one’s own personal experience, from formative experiences that involve some hardship, some grief, some personal suffering, is often or could be more valuable to us (more alive, more meaningful) than any doctrine, than any religious faith, than any words one might hear from someone else or read in some book.” {4}

In esoteric – occult – terms the foundations of the 7FW (and thus of the Order of Nine Angles) are (i) pathei mathos consciously produced through an individual undertaking particular tasks and rôles both esoteric and exoteric, and (ii) the knowledge that our evolution as a species is an individual, a personal, an Aeonic, one and does not and cannot be done by ‘secret occult societies’ of whatever kind, cannot be done through external forms or forces such as politics or religion or by social doctrines or laws being applied to a society or to societies. That is, it is individuals and their pathei mathos who and which are evolutionary, the basis – the quintessence – of the 7FW and of the Order of Nine Angles.

How To Misunderstand The O9A

Order of Nine Angles

O9A

°°°°°°°°°

One of the investigative journalists who earlier this year wrote about the neo-nazi group AtomWaffen Division {1} has revealed – through messages posted on “Twitter” – what appears to be a basic lack of understanding of the O9A despite having claimed that he has studied the O9A for quite some time. His earlier “tweets” about a possible connection between AtomWaffen Division (AWD) and the O9A may well have led to journalist Kelly Weill publishing an article in The Daily Beast about links between AWD and the O9A.

The journalist in question is Jake Hanrahan who, in his latest tweets about the O9A, referenced an article on a website and which website states that it represents an O9A nexion.

In those “tweets” Hanrahan appears to assume that what is written on the website in regard to Mr Myatt is some sort of “official statement” by the O9A whereas – as Anton Long and many others have stated time and time again – no one person, no one O9A nexion, no collocations of O9A nexions, can ever speak or write “on behalf of the O9A” since the fundamental O9A principle of the authority of individual judgment means that the O9A does not have, never has had, and never will have an “official policy” about anything, and never has, and never will make “official statements” about anything. {2}

All any person or group associating themselves with the sub-culture that is the O9A {3} can do is present their personal opinion and/or their personal interpretation of matters O9A and otherwise.

Hanrahan thus seems to repeat the error made by the likes of Massimo Introvigne which is the fallacy of Illicit Transference {4}.

That journalists, academics, and others – in respect of the O9A – continue to commit the fallacy of Illicit Transference by ignoring one of the fundamental principles of the esoteric philosophy of the O9A is proof of just how limited their research into the O9A is, has been, and continues to be.

In regard to how people associating themselves with the O9A regard Mr David Myatt, journalists, academics, and others should read the book A Modern Mysterium {5} and the article Decoding The Life Of Myatt. They will find a diversity of opinion, which diversity is in accord with the O9A principle of the authority of individual judgment.

A Modern Mysterium

David Myatt

David Myatt

Editorial Note: The interesting and informative essay presented below is from the Introduction to the “gratis open access” and 100 page book titled A Modern Mysterium: The Enigma of Myatt And The O9A (pdf). The essay summarizes the salient points of the book, containing as the book does essays written in the past few years by various authors, and divided as the book is into three parts.

The first part deals with the O9A; the second details the claim – the allegation – that Myatt is Anton Long; and the third part presents evidence which contradicts or which casts doubt on that allegation. The work therefore allows the reader to form their own opinion of the O9A and of whether or not there is any merit to the claim that the pseudonymous Anton Long was Mr Myatt.

Introduction, from A Modern Mysterium

As the author of one the essays included in A Modern Mysterium: The Enigma of Myatt And The O9A wrote, the question of whether or not Mr David Myatt is or was “Anton Long” is sui generis insofar as the Order of Nine Angles is concerned. Why? Basically for two reasons.

If he was, then, as several O9A supporters have claimed, his somewhat strange multiform, exeatic, and antinomian, life is a real-life example of not only the practical – ‘sinister’ – ethos of the O9A but also of its core praxis termed the Seven Fold Way, which praxis is a decades-long esoteric and exoteric personal quest for Lapis Philosophicus, for Wisdom.

If he was not, then the O9A remains one modern Occult philosophy among many with little to distinguish it other than perhaps its complexity and its Labyrinthos Mythologicus.

If his life is a practical example of the ‘sinister’ ethos of the O9A – as his decades of practical involvement with political and religious extremism, his support for terrorism, his imprisonment for violence, and his criminal years, might seem to suggest – then it is easy to understand why opponents and critics of the O9A continue to denigrate him, for the documented facts about his life are enough to make Howard Levey – the much vaunted ‘Anton LaVey’, often described as “the founder of modern satanism” – seem, by comparison, just a showman, a charlatan, and a wuss. {1}

In addition, Myatt’s documented intellectualism – as in his Greek translations and commentaries, such as of tractates from the Corpus Hermeticum – make both Levey and the equally vaunted Aquino (of Temple of Set fame) seem to be, by comparison, pretentious pseudo-intellectuals. Unlike those individuals, Myatt has “fluency in the classical languages (Greek and Latin), as well as Arabic” {2} and thus can read primary esoteric, classical, and alchemical sources in their original language whereas they, and most if not all of their followers, have to rely on the translations of others, lacking as they do the erudition of Myatt, an erudition evident in his recent book Tu Es Diaboli Ianua. {3}

The sources used, for example, by Howard Levey – evident in his ‘satanic bible’ and his letters – are populist interpretations of the likes of Nietzsche and Ayn Rand, populist books about psychology, with the anonymous polemic titled Might Is Right much plagiarized. Such sources and populist interpretations are also much in evidence in texts written by Aquino, such as The Crystal Tablet of Set, where populist summaries of philosophies and weltanschauungen, ancient and modern, precede a quite minimalist and vague presentation of ‘satanist’ and/or of Temple of Set ideas. In contrast, when Myatt writes of ethics and about ‘good and evil’ in chapter IV – Questions of Good, Evil, Honour, and God – of his 2013 book Religion, Empathy, and Pathei-Mathos, he provides passages in Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic, along with his own translations. Similarly, when discussing ethics in his more recent Classical Paganism And The Christian Ethos, {4} Myatt provides the relevant Greek texts (such as from the Gospel of John) and his own translations.

It is thus also easy to understand why many supporters of the O9A support the claim that Myatt is Long. For add to his documented exeatic life, to his intellectualism, the fact that he is regarded by academics as “England’s principal proponent of contemporary neo-Nazi ideology and theoretician of revolution” and you have a person who most definitely does seem to fit the profile of what an ONA person is or should be, with his post-2012 ‘philosophy of pathei mathos’ and recent books such as Tu Es Diaboli Ianua and Classical Paganism And The Christian Ethos understood as the musings of someone who, after decades of peregrinations and scholarly study, has found Lapis Philosophicus and who is “living the final apprehension”, with that philosophy, such books, and ‘the last writings of Anton Long’ {5} serving

“to illuminate the O9A for what it is and always has been, beyond the rhetoric, beyond the polemics, beyond its Labyrinthos Mythologicus, and beyond the assumptions made by others. That is, it is a living hereditary, evolving, repository of esoteric knowledge; part of which accumulated and accumulating knowledge is a scholarly perspective on ancient hermeticism; another part of which is a practical modern means (for those who might be interested) to achieve Adeptship and beyond; another part of which knowledge concerns a New Aeon and the logos necessary to bring that Aeon into being. Other parts of which are Esoteric Chant and Aeonics; and so on. In addition, this body of esoteric knowledge now also contains the insights of someone who has ventured beyond The Abyss, and which particular insights return us to that pagan knowledge, that ancient wisdom, of the Rounwytha way, which is, for those who follow it, the way of a certain type of knowing and of a certain type of living.” {6}

All of which makes it unnecessary for anyone – by they O9A or otherwise – to ‘hype’ Mr Myatt, for just presenting the documented facts about his life, and drawing attention to his intellectualism, his erudition, is sufficient. That life, that intellectualism, ‘the last writings of Anton Long’, Myatt’s ‘philosophy of pathei mathos’ (understood as a modern manifestation of the O9A way of the Rounwytha) and books such as Tu Es Diaboli Ianua and Classical Paganism And The Christian Ethos tell the necessary story.

Which story is of a modern Magus; of someone who has spent all of his adult life – half a century – on an esoteric and an exoteric quest. Since such a quest exemplifies what the search for Lapis Philosophicus, for Gnosis, for Wisdom, is all about it is in the final analysis irrelevant if Myatt was or was not the pseudonymous Anton Long. For such a personal quest is the essence of all genuine Occult philosophies and praxises, beyond the labels – the denotata – we or others assign to them, be such labels Left Hand Path, Right Hand Path, Satanist, or O9A.

Which, at least to me and some others, makes Myatt someone to be admired and – perhaps – emulated by those O9A or otherwise.

{1} Myatt, for example, has convictions and imprisonment for violence, in 1972, after leading a gang of skinheads in a ‘paki-bashing’ incident: documented in court proceedings, prison records, and newspapers. A conviction for leading a gang of thieves in 1974 and being a fence: documented in court proceedings, in police records/interviews, in mainstream newspaper reports.

He was arrested in 1998 for conspiracy to murder: documented in police records (Scotland Yard, the operation was code-named Periphery), documented in custody records at Malvern and Charing Cross police stations. He founded and led the political wing of Combat 18, the NSM, a fact documented by several academics and by mainstream newspaper reports.

He publicly supported bin Laden and the Taliban before and after 9/11: documented by several academics, by proceedings of NATO conferences, by newspaper reports. He travelled to Arab countries and – when it was unpopular and very dangerous to do so, such as after 9/11 – incited Jihad: documented by several academics. His writings justifying suicide attacks were used by ‘terrorist’ groups such as Hamas: documented by several academics, and by proceedings of NATO conferences.

Is The O9A Satanist?

Order of Nine Angles

O9A

Is The O9A Satanist?

For quite some time various self-described ‘satanists’ have questioned whether or not the Order of Nine Angles (ONA, O9A) is a satanist group.

Some are of the opinion that it is but only in a limited way, trumpeting as they do some fairly recent (post-2011) O9A texts which state among other things that satanism, for the O9A, is just a “necessary novitiate pathei-mathos”, a practical experience which the initiate learns from and then moves on from.

Many other self-described ‘satanists’, however, are and have been of the opinion that the O9A is not satanist, basing their opinion as they do on how satanism was described by Howard Stanton Levey (the Yahodi; aka Anton LaVey) and then by his followers and admirers. Which Levey-type satanism is basically labelling as satanism what is egoistic, masculous, plebeian, and mundane, where everything supernatural and occult is seen as just useful psychodrama and/or as theatrical props designed to bolster the egoism, the pretensions, of each and every self-declared ‘satanist’ who arrogantly believe they have or they can develop the ability to master, to control, everything (supernatural and otherwise) and anyone. In addition, Levey-type satanism – like the much-vaunted occultism of both Crowley and Aquino – is awash with Hebraism; with ‘demons’ and entities from medieval Hebraic grimoires; with the Hebrew kabbalah, and of course with myths and legends about a Hebraic Satan.

A Novitiate Pathei Mathos

In respect of the claim that satanism – a satanism described for example in the O9A text The Black Book of Satan, first published in 1983, and as described by Anton Long in texts such as Toward Understanding Satanism – is just a novitiate pathei-mathos, one has to bear in mind the O9A’s Labyrinthos Mythologicus and thus the fact that their Labyrinthos Mythologicus is:

“designed to test and confuse – to perplex – novices, aspirant candidates, and those curious about the O9A. Designed to challenge their assumptions about the O9A and about satanism, sorcery, and esotericism in general. To encourage them to arrive at their own conclusions about – to develop the intuition, the Occult skills, to acquire the pathei-mathos, to discover – what the ONA is, and is not.”

Thus, in regard to satanism, readers will find many ONA texts promoting satanism and stating that satanism is the essence of the ONA, while they will also find some other texts stating that satanism is just “a causal form”, just a noviciate pathei-mathos.

Which certainly has confused many of those – such as self-described Levey-inspired satanists – who have opined about the Order of Nine Angles, although had they the nous to study the O9A corpus in detail they would have understood that what the O9A mean by satanism is quite different – radically different – from what Levey and his followers described, and thus from what most self-described modern satanists accept, as ‘satanism’.

O9A Satanism

To appreciate what the O9A mean by Satanism is to understand why one of the five fundamental principles (traditions) of the Order of Nine Angles is “the way of defiance of and practical opposition to Magian abstractions.” {1}

The O9A in their Glossary of ONA Terms (v. 3.07) state that:

“The term Magian is used to refer to the hybrid ethos of Yahoud and of Western hubriati, and also refers to those individuals who are Magian by either breeding or nature. The essence of what we term the Magian ethos is inherent in Judaism, in Nasrany, and in Islam. To be pedantic, we use the term Magian in preference to the more commonly used term Semitic to describe the ethos underlying these three major, and conventional, religions, since the term Semitic is, in our view, not strictly philologically correct to describe such religions.”

Furthermore, the O9A have their own understanding of Satan, described in their text The Geryne of Satan {2} which states that “as originally used and meant, the term satan refers to some human being or beings who ‘diabolically’ plot or who scheme against or who are ‘diabolically’ opposed to those who consider themselves as ‘chosen’ by their monotheistic God.”

Since those who “consider themselves as ‘chosen’ by their monotheistic God” are the Jews it follows that the O9A consider the archetype of Satan to be the archetype of opposition to Jews, to Jewish influence, and of course opposition to monotheistic and essentially patriarchal religions such as Judaism, Nasrany, and Islam {3}. Which naturally explains why the O9A has its code of kindred honour, why it has always supported National Socialism both in theory and, via Insight Roles, in practice; why they support holocaust revisionism; why they have their Vindex mythos {4}, and why their Mass of Heresy {5} includes the following declaration:

“Adolf Hitler was sent by our gods
To guide us to greatness.
We believe in the inequality of races
And in the right of the Aryan to live
According to the laws of the folk.
We acknowledge that the story of the Jewish ‘holocaust’
Is a lie to keep our race in chains
And express our desire to see the truth revealed.
We believe in justice for our oppressed comrades
And seek an end to the world-wide
Persecution of National-Socialists.”

It is no surprise, therefore, that the O9A has published texts such as The Error of Egoism: Magian Occultism, Satanic Subversion, and The O9A, included as that text is in the seventh edition (2015) of their Guide To The Order of Nine Angles: Theory and Praxises. {6}

In addition, the O9A with its Rounwytha tradition, its Sapphic nexions, its code of kindred honour, is disdainful of and in ‘satanic’ opposition to the Magian patriarchal, masculous, ethos, which still dominates the Western world.

The Sinister-Numinous Tradition

In recent years – post-2011 and following the retirement of Anton Long from active involvement with the Order of Nine Angles – various O9A texts have been released which detail (i) the aural traditions regarding Internal Adept and the transition to and beyond The Abyss on the Seven Fold Way {7}, and (ii) the hermetic and pagan (Greco-Roman, and Western) antecedents of the Seven Fold Way and of O9A esoteric philosophy {8}.

In essence, the Seven Fold Way of the O9A is – to use terms adopted by Myatt in his Vindex mythos – profoundly Faustian, Promethean, Thorian. That is, embodying the ethos of the West sans any Hebraic influence. But it is also futuristic, or rather Aeonic, given who and what the individuals who go beyond The Abyss are and do, living beyond the Magian, the patriarchal, abstractions of ‘good’ and ‘evil’ just as the mythical Satan did and just as all pagan Magisters – both male and female – have always done.

Thus, as someone relatively recently wrote:

“the O9A is indeed satanic since every O9A person, whatever O9A way they follow or espouse, is a presencing of those forces that would, if left unchecked, lead us in practical ways to that individual apprehension and that way of living which are beyond good and evil, beyond the light and the dark.” {9}

Conclusion

Given their historical understanding of satan – and thence their definition of the term satanism – it is my opinion that the O9A, with their holocaust denial, with their adversity to the Magian ethos, with their Vindex mythos, with their exeatic (Faustian) Seven Fold Way, and with their championing of National Socialism, are most certainly a satanist group.

In addition, O9A satanism – based as it also is on the principle of kindred honour (another of their five core principles) – also debunks, and is opposed to, the egoistic, the materialistic, so-called ‘satanism’ of Howard Stanton Levey, the charlatan, indebted as his ‘satanism’ is to Hebraism and manifesting as it does the Magian patriarchal ethos.

{3} While an O9A satanist is opposed in principle to Magian religions such as Christianity and Islam, sly tactical, or Aeonic, considerations (embodied in the Dark Art Of Shrenching) mean that such Magian forms can sometimes be useful.

A sly tactical consideration would be O9A Insight Roles such as spending time as a Nazarene monk or “converting” to Islam and supporting Jihad.

An Aeonic consideration would be a strategic alliance with Muslim forces opposing in practical ways the Zionist entity, be such forces Shia or Sunni.

Such tactical and Aeonic/strategic considerations are part of the O9A’s sinister dialectic.
